Copper clad aluminum wire is a layer of copper skin on the outside of the aluminum core, and it is not an insulated wire, it belongs to the bare wire category. The enameled aluminum wire is an insulating paint film coated on the outside of the aluminum core. It is an insulated wire and belongs to the enameled wire category.
Compared with pure copper wire, copper clad aluminum enamelled wire has obvious advantages: first, it is light in weight, convenient for transportation and installation and construction, and can reduce labor costs; second, it has obvious economic benefits. Separation of the core wire is almost impossible and additional anti-theft effect is received.
However, in addition to people's inherent prejudice, copper-clad aluminum wire has the disadvantage of being more corrosive than copper wire, which restricts its development and promotion. How to prevent copper-clad aluminum wire from being corroded has become the key to its popularization and application.
Copper and aluminum in copper-clad aluminum wire are two metals with different electrode potentials. When copper and aluminum are exposed to the atmosphere on their end faces, if the humidity in the atmosphere is high, the end faces will absorb water molecules in the air and accumulate. The water droplets combine with sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the air to form a corrosive solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). As a result, a corrosion battery consisting of an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte solution and an electronic circuit is created. A corrosion cell is a short-circuit galvanic cell that causes the destruction of metal materials without doing useful work to the outside world. In this corrosion cell, aluminum is corroded because of the low electrode potential.
In order to avoid electrochemical corrosion of copper-clad aluminum wire ends, the best way is to block the ends from the atmosphere. At present, there are two main ways to solve this problem:
1. Electroplating method: A layer of copper is plated on the butt joints of copper-clad aluminum wires, but it takes too much time (40 minutes). However, it is not a problem in companies that produce copper-clad aluminum wires, because many joints can be plated together. The difficulty is that copper plating on the surface of aluminum is very difficult.
2. Copper-colored quick-drying paint: dry and solid within two minutes, and the color is appropriate for copper. This is very convenient for users who use copper-clad aluminum wire. Because the user can cut the wiring anywhere, corrosion can be avoided by applying quick-drying paint immediately to the section.
